The Hunted - Unity WIP #2 [COMPLETEE]

Just keep playing, just keep playing...

Good night of sleep, thinking about scripts and animation and code.. Code everywhere. And it's not even complex! Let's get back to it:

So, I had some issues with making the choice options work, so after fiddling with the script endlessly I asked Chris to pick his brains for an answer. It was so.. Simple.

EventSystem was missing! Added it in and all my options worked as planned out. So happy right now. Hell, yes.

--Forgot a bit before about the look of the Menu in Unity, so here ya go!--

Menu Scene (Screeenn..)
Pretty simple, and the first thing I managed to finish off. A small victory in making clickable objects within my menu that went on to the game, and showed some credits.. Gave me a bit of confidence if anything. So here's how it looks:

-picture.

The Narrative
Well, there's no specific character for the narrative. But the actual dialogue options is different from the ones for Characters and the Shadows.

You can also see here the amount of views I have in this one scene alone. That's to move the camera around. Just because it's 2D doesn't make it static guys!

The Script
Still linking up all the various sequences and playing it through for any flaws (at this point) but there's a fair bit going on here, as you can see. I wanted to break it up further which would have made it like 3 times as long.. That's a no go for my poor head.

You can also see the Inspector panel to the right there. When I click an object within the scene, or my project folders I can change their properties and add various components for them within my game to make them behave differently and what not. Pretty complex when you look at it but I've only learned to use what I need to for this chapter anyway..

Call upon the final scene!
Note: The finished sequences are all in this one. Woo!

Calling upon the final scene: The Graveyard.

The final part of Chapter 1! The End of the Beginning. ~

Peek at: Game Over
Yes, I added it in. I know, what.

Peek at: To be Continued & Graveyard
Because it's chapter one.. It just needed this okay.

And after all that work, it's bloody done! YES!

I'll send it up to the Fungus guys for uploading, check it out.

The Hunted - Unity WIP #1

Things got eventful!

So, patching this up in Unity and my head doesn't wrap around coding very well but I'm so chuffed with how its coming along. It's like a small child on Christmas day.

I was going to chop up each area into various scenes but I think having it all in one place makes it flow so much better.

Slicing for Animation.
I had to create a spritesheet (thanks Finfin) then take it into unity to cut it up, then create a looping animation to show the firey-ember effect that continues as the game plays through. Grid slicing for the winn~

The Many Test Runs!
Running through the script so many times to see any changes, test out any alterations. It was time consuming but seeing it all finally come together was so worth it.

Animating Shadows
Unity's animating feature is pretty basic so being able to move the sprites is straight forward. I could have made spritesheets for every shadow character and moved each bit like a proper animated adventure but in the interest of time (A lot of home issues currently) I limited that as such. I still love the outcome!

Double the Testing!
Two monitors, twice the size. Easier testing and comparisons. Need I say anything more about this part? :B

Alright though, lets be serious. You can see the game preview on one screen then the script on the bottom right. The Scenes in the top left and the sequences being shown on the far right side. It just makes everything so much easier.

Off to bed and onwards tomorrow, the final touch ups.

The Hunted - Paint Production WIP.

Stepping back a little here..

One or two Work in Progress screen shots to show how I've been going about the environments and the earlier stages of the coloured characters.

Technical Roughs.
Using lines to get the rough structure on a bright background to see how it looked perspective-wise. Technical drawing classes from A-Level Graphic Design, you have your use now!

Fills 'n' Textures
Magic wand, fill it with some block colours then add in the textures (courtesy of my 'friends in high places' on DeviantART, danke. <3)

Shading ontop of the texturing to give a more defined feeling to it and rid of any possible 'flat-ness'.

Curse you 2D..

Base to Shades!
Using our dear Lilith's character sheet as an example. I'll compare the progress from body reference, lineart, block colour to the shading outcome below. This is simply to see what effect it has over all.

With that, my next one will be screenies within Unity itself. Woo! Progress!

The Hunted - Screen mode.. Things.

While in work this afternoon, I realised...

I haven't made transition screens for my game.. Damnit.

So,after arriving home and sitting behind my desk, chips in hand, I got to work. (With Mister Finfin on hand for some.. Expert Advice.)

I came up with these:

Menu Screen:

Loading Screen:

Game Over:

To be Continued:

I think we're done here.. Onwards to Unity!

The Hunted - Extra little Characters

A little Extra add on here..

I finished little portraits for the likes of my other 3 'non-main' characters. Well.. One of them is.

Joe - The Storage Beast

Thought to be a laid back, chilled guy, when in fact Joe is possessed by the many demons that invade the town. He chases after Lilith, being one to try and hunt her down possessively.

Isobelle - The Ghost

Isobelle is thought to be following Joe around when in fact Joe is one of the demons. Maybe Isobelle is trying to aid Lilith from another world? Who knows...

Summoner - The Nameless Mystery Woman

Little is known about this woman. Not even her name is revealed to us. She's found in the graveyard when Lilith arrives, and she takes her under into the 'Abyss'...

Now, it's piecing it all together! Man, this is gonna get interestingg~

The Hunted - Scripting, boom!

Talking about plans.. Here's the plan!

Without spoiling much (well a lot for those who want a peek), I finished the script that I'm going to pour into Fungus over the coming days.

In contains the dialogue, the narrative and the options + where they lead in a colour and note coordinated format that.. Took a while to sync up properly. Ha!

Without further a-do. Here's the links from my Drop Box!

Update-Desu:
In the interest of time I won't be adding the Inventory system until a later date. The BETA of The Hunted Chapter 1 won't include the Inventory system, though you will continue to pick up the Bag from the store allowing it to be accessed. This was done so I can add it into later Chapters if I need to. c:

The Hunted - Environment backgrounds #4 Againn.

Last one, promise.

Did a final piece, just a little Alley way. Feels like I can work with a little more now. :)

Alley (Before Embers):

Alley (With Embers):

Next one should be either script base, additional story portraits, or the item portraits.

The Hunted - Inspiration (Oops) #Updated.

I didn't forget to post up inspirations behind "The Hunted"....

My first idea was something based around Celtic Mythology, Untitled, it went something like this:

Irish Based:

You play first person through the eyes of a spirit, a warrior from wars past in this peaceful land. You awaken to the call of the Badhbh Cathe - Morrígan, Macha, Nemain. They summon you to find the 4 lost treasures of their people the  Tuatha dé Danann. You're sent across the world in search for these items, returning them to the center of "Paradise" where the Tree of Life stands. Here you can stop the war below, and submit the chaos into peace where a new age of Paradise can start.

Based of Nexon's Mabinogi, and The Mabinogion Irish and Welsh Mythological book (containing information from ancient times about the many tribes that settled within Ireland at various times).

Also based off Vindictus by the same company (Mabinogi Heroes). The darker feel and more realistic textures really pull me in. As such, it's gonna be the inspiration behind both this idea and my main idea.

I loved this idea but I felt that it would take too much time, especially for the smaller engine like Fungus - So! Came my next idea and the Inspiration for it.

Welcome to "The Hunted"

The Hunted. It took a while to come up with that name anyway. I wanted something short and sweet and after filling two pages in my sketchbook of possible titles I decided that I liked this one the most. Some others were:

Kill and Run
At Death's Door
Essence of Darkness
Hunter
In the Shadows
The Devils Daughter.

I felt I couldn't progress without a title for my little story based game, it was time consuming but I think The Hunted fits well.

I looked at games like The Darkness and The Darkness II, the 'Tendrils' and idea of something demonic possessing his body is a very similar concept to what I wanted of Lilith.

Including a few Fanart's I found that were pretty inspiring towards my own idea. All found on DeviantART and asked for permission before posting. Thanks a bunch guys. <3

The Dragon Age series has an interesting way of progressing depending on what they player does and how their relationships build. A pretty complex idea for a short game like this one but I couldn't help but look into the way the story progresses depending what you choose.

The Witches Prison got best 'Escape' game of 2013. It's full of puzzles and has incredible environmental scenery. You help the girl find out more about her ancestors.

Various 'Artist's own creations' also pieced together my 'moodboard', I feel it's only right I pop them up here. Again, all credit where credit is due. They were only inspiration.. I didn't make any of them. DeviantART and it's community saved my life once again...

The following 3 are screenshots taken from the game 'Vindictus' (Nexon +Devcat (c))

I used these to design the style of the buildings and the effect of fire lighting on the environment. Couldn't have done it otherwise...

Without further a-do, let us continue~

The Hunted - Environment Backgrounds #3

Alright!

Quick fire after the last update but I've added in the burn-lighting to the 5 images I posted previously. Each image has 5 different frames that I hope to cycle together within Fungus to create a looping flicker effect as the game plays through.

Start to finish, we have!

Home:

Street 1:

Storage:

Street 2:

Graveyard:

I'm pretty happy with the effects on these, even if I didn't put in actual flames you still get the burnt look and the chaos feel from looking at them! Cake for me later...

The Hunted - Environment Background #2

Finally wrapped it up.

Finished the remaining 3 textures for the backgrounds. I'll be adding ember-like effects and shadows of the demons into various areas but here's what the base ones look like so far!

Starting House:

Storage room:

The Street 2:

Adding fire-like aspects to them as I type, instead of animating the flames, I plan to have slight lighting adjustments on a loop, with an ash falling effect placed over the top - if all goes well!

The Hunted - Environment Background #1

Quick little update

Two finalised backgrounds, the fire animations will be quickly thrown on top to lay it up a little. The fire animations will only consist of between 3-6 frames per piece. Nothing too complex but enough variation over all.

The Graveyard:

The Street:

I still have 2 interior environments to do, and one more of the street with a less perspective feel to it.

I wanted to do more environments but having a few of higher quality seems more important in my mind, compared to about 20 that look really rough. Ideally, more would be better but as such, this chapter won't be huge so a few smaller ones would work fine.
